She was born in the Bhonsle family of the royal house of Thanjavur, raised in the lap of luxury at the magnificent Sadar Mahal and showered with all the privileges of her birth. Guided by a strong spiritual quest to seek the divine, Raj Kunwar is, however, resigned to her destiny of a marriage into a royal household. She grows up to marry the scion of  Sardar Shitole family of of Gwalior, Sidhojirao, later to become Yog Martand Yogiraj Siddhanath .
